Splitting her time between Australia and the US, ELEVEN Australia Education Ambassador, Mandy Kingsman goes from sunny Sydney to snowy NYC and back again. Meaning? She’s a master at chilly season hairstyling. Here she shares her must-have products, ultimate styling advice and the best hair to pair with a beanie this winter.

1. How did you get into hairdressing?

That’s actually a long story, but it involves growing up in a small country town, giving myself haircuts for awhile and a friend deciding she would let me cut her very long hair off with a razor, and not one designed for your hair. One that you would use on your legs! I had no idea what I was doing, I was at university studying to become a teacher. But I worked visually and somehow figured it out. After that haircut, I left university and found myself an apprenticeship with a salon.

2. How long have you been a hairdresser?

I’ve been hairdressing for 16 years. Wow, It really doesn’t feel like it’s been that long.

3. What piece of hair advice do you share with all your clients?

‘Don’t fight it – Work with it’. Look at what your hair does, work with the natural movement, texture or curl and find the best solution for it.

4. My hair idol is…

Tyler Johnson. That man is a wizard with scissors.

5. Are there any hairstyles you’ve had that you’d rather forget?

I have all my primary school photos that show the many versions of mullets that I collected over the years. But at 5 that can be kind of cute, right?

6. What product couldn’t you live without?

That’s an easy one, Frizz Control Shaping Cream. I put it in my hair wet and lightly scrunch it in to get movement and control into my hair and I let it dry him naturally.

7. I couldn’t live without…

Checking I have my house keys! I have lost count how many times I have locked myself out of the house. Although it makes for some hilarious stories.

8. What product do you use most in the salon?

I Want Body Volume Foam. It’s so lightweight but gives a beautiful amount of volume and leaves the hair feeling soft.

9. What hair myth would you like to set the record straight on?

The hotter your heat styling tools the better. That’s just crazy. When your irons or tongs are on a really high heat all you are doing is pushing all of the moisture out of your hair! Turn down that heat!

10. What’s the craziest story a client has ever told you?

Wouldn’t you like to know! I am a vault when it comes to what my clients tell me. However one time I overheard another client telling their hairdresser…. Haha just kidding!!

11. What’s your go-to hairstyle for winter?

It’s cold. So accessorise 2 or 3 day old hair with a great hat or beanie. Here’s how:   1 First, shampoo and condition with Hydrate My Hair Shampoo and Conditioner. 2 Cocktail 2-3 pumps of Miracle Hair Treatment and mix in a small amount of Frizz Control Shaping Cream. Apply to damp hair. 3 Blow dry hair until it is completely dry. 4 Using a flat iron on medium heat, create an s shaped wave in the hair. 5 Pinch the ends of your hair and lift away from your face, lightly dust I Want Body Volume Powder to the mid lengths and ends and shake to create width and separation. 6 To add a little more lift work in some Dry Powder Paste at the root area. Keep this look really cute on day three by throwing on a beanie or hat!
