5 key hair trends to emerge from Melbourne Fashion Festival 2021

On the 11th of March, we kicked off our first year as the official hair partner of the 25th annual Melbourne Fashion Festival with our co-creative director Joey Scandizzo as the festival’s hair director. Close to 400 covetable looks showcased over 9 runway shows that were shown at iconic locations around the city of Melbourne highlighting classic Australian designers with Joey creating fresh hair looks to match. While the well-selected wardrobe gave us a sneak-peek into the fashion trends for the coming season, the hair trends we’ve spotted on the runway are equally awe-inspiring.

From dual-textured styles to deep side-line partings, natural curls and movement, new takes on braids and fun accessories, these are the cues we’re taking to up our hair game.

MULTI-TEXTURED

In Runways Two, Five and Six we saw a sleek look on top with volume or dry texture through the lengths. This multi-texture style is always timeless but feels particularly modern now!

“I think what makes this feel modern is how unexpected it is and the clash of different textures and finishes to the hair make it move differently. Whether there is a high shine or a more muted or matte finish – the overall shape and silhouette can be personalised to each model giving it a modern feel. It looks great with a centre part or completely pushed back off the face, it all depends on the face shape and what is more flattering on the hairline.” JS

Digital Runway Five presented by marie claire took us to the beach by way of URBNSURF surf park – and the hair followed suit. In line with the show’s aquatic theme, models took to the runway with modern textured wet-look updos that worked seamlessly with the clothes. Joey doesn’t recommend recreating this vibe to the letter for nine-to-five, instead, he recommends taking inspiration from the runway to amp up your regular look. For a version that works for every day, here are Joey’s tips for making this textured hair trend work to dress up any look.

“Super slick hair is an easy way to dress up any look. It will give you that high polished feel, regardless of whether your hair is short or long. Playing around with a different finish can really elevate your look! You want to create a low pony that is flat and smooth right to the nape of the neck. What keeps this looking modern is the mix of textures. Keep it flat up top and add ELEVEN Australia SMOOTH AND SHINE ANTI-FRIZZ SERUM to keep the hair shiny. Then, play around with ELEVEN Australia SEA SALT SPRAY for texture through the ends.” JS

“A centre part is a runways hair hero! When you think of a high-fashion runway, you think of a strong centre part and movement through the ends.

With centre and side partings all over TikTok right now, we’re seeing a play on the two generations (Z and millennials) with both deep side and centre partings making a statement on the runway.” Joey Scandizzo, hair director MFF and co-creative director, ELEVEN Australia

The 25th Melbourne Fashion Festival runway program kicked off at the iconic National Gallery of Victoria with The Gala Runway, presented by David Jones. Wearing the latest looks from the department store, models like Boni (pictured right) and comedy duo The Inspired Unemployed boys (pictured left and centre) – had their hair cut and styled by Joey and are sporting the ‘EFFORTLESS MOVEMENT’ and ‘SIDE LINE’ trends – took to the runway amongst towering installations and ever-changing visuals.

EFFORTLESS MOVEMENT

Rather than overly styled curls and waves, we saw a lot of easy, natural volume and natural-looking waves and curls on the runways (including Gala, One and Four).

Applying MIRACLE HAIR TREATMENT and allowing your hair to air dry and seeing the shape it forms is the best way to encourage natural movement. The key to this though is to leave your hair alone and not touch it so you don’t interrupt how the natural textures form. You can see how wavy, curly, coily or straight your hair is and where the natural kinks are – from here you can see how much of the movement you want to enhance and what product you might need. Things like SEA SALT TEXTURE SPRAY and DRY FINISH TEXTURE SPRAY are perfect for enhancing textures and keeping movement in place without hair looking really ‘producty’.

“All of the looks we created were non-gender specific. I love irregular texture and movement that almost looks like an accident. I think it looks much more realistic and attainable when you enhance a curl or movement that has been created naturally in hair opossed to a really manufactured look. I love looking at each model’s hair when they walk in and really analysing how it falls and the parts that could be enhanced.” JS
