Derby Day Wrap Up

Spring Racing Carnival officially kicked off with the first of the big four days, Derby Day taking place (and taking over our social feeds) over the weekend. With race-goers sticking to a strict traditional black and white dress code, Derby Day is known for serving some of the best fashion moments for the week. Still, everyone knows that the races are really all about the hats and by extension the hair, right?

Traditional hats and fascinators were out in full force, but this year also saw IT girls and influencers rewrite the headwear code by accessorising their Derby Day hairstyles with everything from stacked up bobby pins and barrettes to woven ribbons and statement bows. We’ve rounded up our favourite Derby Day hairstyles styles and spoken to the experts who created them for their top tips on how to get the look.

“My biggest piece of advice for choosing a hairstyle to wear to the races is to work around your headpiece, not your hair,” says Hermiz Daniel, who created Jane Scandizzo, Eleanor Pendleton and Rozalia Russian’s Derby Day hair looks. His go-to product for season? “When I’m doing a sleek ponytail or bun I’ll apply the ELEVEN Australia I Want Body Foam to dry hair and keep pumping it through as I comb then hair up, it creates a hold and wet look that lasts all day.”

ELEVEN Australia Co-Creative Director Joey Scandizzo also armed himself with the foam when creating Sofia Richie’s sleek low Derby Day bun. Applying it to Sofia’s damp hair before drying it in, Joey then secured her hair into a low ponytail at the nape of the neck. “Then I split Sofia’s ponytail into two, twisting each section into opposite directions and then around each other to create a sleek, low bun.” Joey finished the look with some ELEVEN Australia Flexible Hold Hairspray for all day hold, sans the stiffness.

Meanwhile Joey was also part of supermodel, Elle Macpherson’s Derby Day glam squad. “Elle was wearing a really cool white Toni Maticevski outfit and white, wide-brimmed hat so we went for her signature beachy waves on the day,” says Joey. Prepping The Body’s sun-kissed, blonde hair with ELEVEN Australia Miracle Treatment, Joey then applied ELEVEN Australia Sea Salt Texture Spray for grit, texture and hold. “Then I tonged Elle’s hair alternating the direction of the curl for a more natural finish,” says Joey. With Melbourne Cup Day happening tomorrow, we can’t wait to see what styles the stars serve up then. Giddy up!
